Larson (Don M.) "Camille: One Family's Story" Manuscript; 2020
Archival Description
"The collection consists of a twenty-page Microsoft Word document titled "Camille: One Family's Story," written by Don M. Larson in 2020 and updated in 2023. Mr. Larson described his manuscript narrative of Hurricane Camille as "just the story of an ordinary extended family, suddenly and unexpectedly caught up in extraordinary circumstances. It is a personal memoir, told largely from the point of view of the author, who was then, at age 16, the youngest member of that family. So, It's not 'based on a true story'; it is a factual account, to the best of my recollection, from a survivor—me.""
Detailed Description
From the Mississippi Department of Archives and History Larson (Don M.) "Camille: One Family's Story" Manuscript Collection (Z/2382.000/S). Recollections by Don M. Larson of his experiences during Hurricane Camille when he was a teenager. Includes day-by-day break-down with approximate time estimates. Larson was living in Vicksburg, but his parents and him drove to the coast after receiving news that his grandfather passed leading up to the storm and they had to care for his grandmother. Details the storm surge and flooding in the house, including that the house detached from the foundation and floated, most likely saving the family from drowning in the house. Recounts the following days of clean-up and burying his grandfather, including seeing bodies of those killed by the storm.
