Firsthand Accounts of Camille & Katrina

Two archival items detailing personal, firsthand experiences of Hurricanes Camille and Katrina.

  • Typed manuscript

Larson (Don M.) "Camille: One Family's Story" Manuscript; 2020

"The collection consists of a twenty-page Microsoft Word document titled "Camille: One Family's Story," written by Don M. Larson in 2020 and updated in 2023. Mr. Larson described his manuscript narrative of Hurricane Camille as "just the story of an ordinary extended family, suddenly and unexpectedly caught up in extraordinary circumstances. It is a personal memoir, told largely from the point of view of the author, who was then, at age 16, the youngest member of that family. So, It's not 'based on a true story'; it is a factual account, to the best of my recollection, from a survivor—me.""

*Warning: Manuscript includes descriptions of dead and decomposing bodies.

  • Recording of the water level's progression

Hurricane Katrina - Mauffray Family Home Video; August 29, 2005

"The series consists of a video recording made at the then-residence of Conrad Lex Mauffray and family on Union Street in Bay St. Louis, Mississippi, during the landfall of Hurricane Katrina on the morning of August 29, 2005. The video, with a running time of fifteen minutes and twenty-two seconds, was recorded by Katherine (Mrs. Conrad) Mauffray. "
