This quilt, titled "African Sunburst," was made by Hystercine Rankin (1929–2010) in 1990 in Lorman, Jefferson County, Mississippi. Hystercine Rankin was a nationally acclaimed quilter respected for her incredible artistry and expressive designs. She was inspired to create African Sunburst after sitting at a window and watching the sun’s rays break through the clouds. Rankin’s friend, Constance Keith Alford, provided the traditional, hand-woven African Kente cloth that is featured in the center and in small blocks throughout the quilt. Alford later purchased the quilt and donated it to the Mississippi Department of Archives and History.
