From the Mississippi Department of Archives and History Mississippi State Penitentiary (Parchman) Photographs (PI/PEN/P37.4). Black-and-white photograph of a line of black men hoeing a field, reaching from the right side foreground to the left side background. The men are wearing some combination of striped pants, solid light-colored or striped shirts, suspenders, and hats. Behind the line towards the image’s center is a white man on horseback watching the working men; he’s wearing a light-colored solid shirt, dark tie, and a hat. Behind the men in the background is a sparse tree line.
