Letter from Thomas Foner to his parents (Jack Donald and Liza Foner); 1964
Description
From the Mississippi Department of Archives and History's Thomas Foner Freedom Summer Papers (Z/2312). Tom recounts to his parents a series of incidents that occurred in a single day in one area of Mississippi, including his escorting of Allen Dulles and others investigating the Chaney, Goodman, and Schwerner case. He adds that two Black children were poisoned by a white man, several COFO volunteers were arrested, guns and ammunition were stolen from a National Guard Armory, a Black church nearby is burning, and two civil rights workers were shot. He comments on a letter from the President of the Jackson Mississippi Junior Chamber of Commerce that was against federal intervention, listing recent legislation in Mississippi that infringe on individual rights. He closes that he will be staying in Mississippi after the summer's end.
